Competition Team
Competition Team is the highest level of commitment a dancer can reach at Level Up Dance Academy. Dancers must audition for this team and there is no guarantee of acceptance. Our competitive students are expected to have strong technique, extensive knowledge of dance terminology, and an exceptional work ethic. Dancers will be required to train a minimum of 5.5 hours a week and attend all mandatory conventions, competitions, and performances.
Lots of our dancers begin on our Performance Team and then move up to Competition Team as they progress through their dance training.
Requirements:
- Auditions are held in May each year
- Ages 7+
- 2+ years of dance training in ballet, jazz, or hip hop (whether that be at Sophie Dance or another studio)
- Extra fees including but not limited to: competition and convention entry fees, extra costumes and rehearsal times, and competition team swag

Performance Team
The purpose of this team is to nurture your child’s passion for dance and performance by providing a fun and supportive environment where they can grow as a dancer, step up their training, develop their technique, and enjoy exciting performance opportunities. Performances are all about heart, celebration and fun - no judges, no trophies, just pure passion and the power of dance to uplift and inspire. It is a great stepping stone between taking recreational classes and being on Competition Team. While it still requires more of a time and financial commitment, it is not as demanding as the Competition Team. If your dancer is looking to Level Up their training, have multiple performance opportunities and be a part of a team, please read our requirements below!
Requirements:
- 3-hour rehearsal block on Wednesdays - two hours of required technical training and one hour of choreography with our Performance Team Creative Director, Kaity Kelly!
- Additional costs such Performance Team swag, additional costumes, show tickets, Clippers tickets, and weekend or weeknight performances.
- Dancers will need pink ballet shoes, tan jazz shoes, and a leotard worn with tights, leggings or dance shorts
Teams I, II, III
For dancers ages 7+ who have danced with Sophie Dance or Level Up for a minimum of 1 year and show they are ready to take dance to the next level. Dancers must have good consistent attendance, show proper technique in class, and love to perform in front of large audiences, as this is a performance based class.
These evaluations are made by teachers during the main season classes and/or camps.
Petite Team
Similar to Teams I - III, Petite team hosts dancers ages 5-7 years old. These dancers participate in Knotts Berry Farm's performance, Larchmont Halloween Festival, and the Nutcracker.
Performance Team Plus
Designed for the dancer who is looking to dance more and perform more and possibly considering joining a competitive dance team in the future. These dancers will train one additional day of the week in a one hour class with a Level Up Competition team choreographer and are required to take an additional hour of dance technique per hour.
